1. 3-D Embellishments

3-D flowersOrganza flowers and other 3-dimensional embellishments are adding depth to 2016’s wedding dresses.

2. V-necklines

plunging v-neck hot wedding dress trend 2016We’ll be seeing lots of v-necklines, especially plunging v-necklines. The lace straps are also frequently seen and a move away from the ever-popular strapless styles.

3. Lacey layers and overlays

Lovely lace wedding dressVictorian lace has been front and center lately. You may have seen this type of lace on every day fashion styles this year. Now, wedding dresses are getting adorned with it too. It looks like someone sewed your grandmother’s doilies onto a dress–but you know, in a good way. Note that this dress is an example of another wedding dress 2016 trend: a nectarean silhouette, with a bodice that comes down over the hips.

4. Flowing Bohemian

Boho wedding dress styleThis is one trend taken right from current street fashion. Drapey, off-the-shoulder lace gives a casual vibe for this wedding dress trends 2016 look. Pair it with a bohemian-inspired hair accessory and it’s right for a trendy, outdoors wedding.

5. Stylish sleeves

wedding dress trends 2016Ever since Kate Middleton graced us with her lace sleeve wedding dress, designers have been incorporating sleeves into each new season’s wedding dresses. This year, it’s all about sleeves of any length. From barely-there cap sleeves to Kate’s full sleeves, shoulders are looking a little more covered in 2016.

Saree for Partying

Gold, pink and magenta sariThis is the saree I wore to a friend’s Guyanese wedding this summer. Totally overwhelmed by all the choices of beautiful sarees available, I had a family friend who is originally from India help me find this one. It was custom tailored for me so instead of one long piece of fabric, it had a gathered skirt and a loop to hold one end over my shoulder. This helped us first-time saree wearers have a hope of walking and dancing in all that fabric!

Pink and magenta SariI love the color combination of orchid purple, magenta pink and metallic gold in this party saree. Hopefully I’ll get an occasion to use it again because it was so fun and elegant to wear.

Puppy in a SariThe pup tried it on too but he wasn’t enthused. He’s really not a fan of wearing any type of clothing, though.

Seeing our sorority sisters in shades of green, blue, pink and purple sarees was a colorfully fun experience. I’m so grateful that the bride encouraged her friends try on a piece of her culture to help celebrate the wedding! What have you worn to a wedding that was a new experience for you?

Ready, Set, Bridal!

The historic Nicollet Island Inn in Minneapolis recently unveiled their new Bridal Ready Room and were kind enough to let me tour it. Chances are you’ve been the bride or bridesmaid at a venue with a cramped little room without enough space, lighting, mirrors or all three. Nicollet Island Inn is a venue that realized the need for bridal parties to spread out, get pampered and most of all have fun while getting ready for the big event.

Here’s the finished product: isn’t it gorgeous?

Nicollet Island Inn Bridal Ready RoomConverted from one of the venue’s hotel rooms, the Bridal Ready Room has countertop space, plenty of outlets and a full bathroom. Ahh, bliss. The venue offers brides little extras to enjoy while getting ready including a personalized iPod, flowers, and an emergency kit.

Antique PhoneAdorable little touches like a working antique phone and a chandelier are details after my own heart.

Bridal Ready RoomBrides who book the venue also get a complimentary stay in the hotel. There’s also the option of renting just the Bridal Ready Room if they are getting married in the neighborhood and need a place to get ready. This is great for all the couples choosing to get married in the scenic St. Anthony Main area, which is full of picturesque wedding venues such as the nearby Nicollet Island Pavilion which partners for weddings with Nicollet Island Inn.

Nicollet Island Inn Grand Entrance“We wanted to make a space that was elegant and allows you to have fun,” Sarah Gruber, the Special Events Director, told me. “Getting ready is one of the funnest parts of your day.”

Spring Days & Rustic Chalets

Theodore Wirth CenterLast weekend I discovered a hidden gem of a venue. Nestled in Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis by lakes, trails and a golf course, the Theodore Wirth Center has a rustic north woods vibe yet is somehow still sophisticated. I was on a panel at an event here, and was honestly charmed as it was much prettier than what I was expecting for a park venue. Inspired, I did an impromptu photo shoot that inspired this combo venue/outfit post.

One of the event attendees told me she’d seen photos of a wedding that was held here where all the guests wore flannel and dinner was a potluck. I can totally picture how that unique wedding theme would be a perfect fit for this venue, but a more traditional, smaller wedding or other party would also be cute in this cozy spot.

7 Event Design Trends for 2014

The Event GalleryLast month I attended The Event Gallery’s 2014 trend event, a showcase from local wedding and event vendors at The Event Gallery’s uptown Minneapolis space.

Here are seven standout trends to consider for event planning in the upcoming year.

Farm to Table

farm to tableFarmer’s markets, eating local and organic everything are all so big right now, it’s no surprise that incorporating farm-inspired, nature-sourced elements into event décor is a popular wedding trend for 2014. This can include using re-purposed, found and salvaged objects, such as the pallets that form the backdrop for this scene. Farm to Table is a perfect theme for sustainability-minded couples. With vegetables and fruits taking center stage in lieu of a traditional floral centerpiece, the decorations look good enough to eat. Sequin Sweetheart

pink sequin tableIndulge in all the sequins, glitter, gold and pink your heart desires. Sequin tablecloths, glitter details, chandelier-inspired centerpieces, satin napkins and pink roses make a luxurious and glam statement. The little details of the glitter-dipped miniature champagne bottles and gold silverware are the perfect finishing touches to bring the look together. Whether you want this whole look or just a touch a touch of sparkle for your event, there is a lot to be inspired by in this set up by Linen Effects.

Donut Bar

Donut BarFollowing on the heels of the popular cupcake trend, donuts are rising to the top. There’s something charmingly retro about the deep-fried pastries and this display really showcases that charm. This vintage-glam donut and dessert bar features non-traditional flavors that will surprise and delight guests. Like cupcakes, the donut bar gives a selection of sweets choices to attendees. To round out the variety, meringues or macaroons make a lovely addition too. Rentals: The Vintage Type Donuts: Glam Doll Donuts

How Do You Know…? Pins

who do you know pinsThis is such a brilliant idea, I don’t know why I’ve never seen this done at a wedding before. A display of pins lets guest select and wear the one that best describes how they know the happy couple. It’s a genius way to help attendees break the ice and get to know one another, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing it used more and more often in wedding seasons to come. Stationary: By Stelie Designs

Realistically Detailed Cakes
