Special Occasion Hair Styling + Giveaway

Special Occasion Hair

Special Occasion Hair

I’ve pinned over 100 hairstyles on my Special Occasion Hair board on Pinterest, but I haven’t perfected many of these styles myself. Do you ever see a fancy braided hairdo and wish you could do it yourself? I attempted one…here’s what happened.

Special Occasion Hair

I needed a special occasion hair style to wear to a friend Liz of In Search of Water’s party earlier this month. I’ve been rocking braided hairstyles since I’ve had hair long enough to braid, but I usually just wing it. This time I used the step-by-step instructions from the book Stunning Braids by celebrity hair and makeup stylist Monaé Everett, which you can totally win at the end of today’s post!

Special Occasion Hair

The style I chose had a teased pouf behind a side braid that was a Dutch braid transitioned into a regular braid and then pankcaked to make it looser. Don’t know what those fancy braiding terms mean? I didn’t either, but the book filled me in. It’s really not as difficult as it sounds! I need more practice to perfect the braiding techniques laid out in the book, but with instructions it was easy to make it look nice.

Make a Pet Paw Stocking

Pet paw stocking for dog or catHalf of households in the U.S. have pets and millennials are the largest age group of pet owners, says PR Newswire. So chances are good that either your house includes a pet or you’ll be going to a pet-loving house this holiday season. Include four-legged family members in holiday traditions by making a super cute pet paw stocking! It’s very easy and quick to make.

Materials: 2-3 pieces of felt in your choice of colors. Some acrylic felt is made with 100% recycled plastic bottles! Scissors, plus embroidery floss and needle OR hot glue.

I chose to sew mine since I enjoy hand sewing, but hot glue works just as well and is faster.

Make a DIY Pet Paw Stocking

First, fold the piece of felt in half* and cut a half moon shape in the bottom, as shown in the pink piece. The other shapes are 4 small ovals and 1 large oval for the paw, a large rectangle for the top, and a small rectangle for the hanger.

*This can be a dog paw stocking or a cat paw stocking. For a larger stocking, use two pieces of felt for the body instead of folding one piece. Or for a slimmer stocking, fold in thirds and trim off one third.

Pet paw stockingOf course, if the pet paw stocking is for a cat he will insist on helping to make it. This probably means delaying your progress by sitting on the pieces for a while.

Cats love to "help" with craft projectsAssemble and sew or glue your pet paw stocking in this order:

  1. Paw pieces
  2. Hanger piece
  3. Sew up the sides
  4. Add the accent piece to the top

Now you’re done with your dog paw stocking or cat paw stocking!

Last Minute Gifts They’ll Love

Can’t-Go-Wrong Gift Guide

These are some of my favorite last minute gifts this season. Get everyone checked off your list with last minute gifts they’ll love. How do I know they’ll love ’em? Cause they’re classy and classic and come on, wouldn’t you totally want them yourself?

1. Vintage-Style French Lavender Soap Tins

Last minute gifts they'll loveI saw these soap tins at World Market and fell in love. They’re oh-so-cute in person, with the classy old-fashioned charm of Art Nouveau advertisements. Perfect for hostess gifts and stocking stuffers, these gifts combine useful soap with use-again packaging.

2. Illustrated Classics

For the bookworm, Barnes and Noble has a line of illustrated, leather-bound classic books. Target also has a hardcover line of !function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = '//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js'; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += '?cb=' + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === 'object'){ if(doc.readyState === 'complete'){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, 'script', 'shopsensewidget-script');

" target="_blank">classics (shown here). They’re affordably priced and bound to be cherished long after the flimsy paperbacks have been set aside. Perfect for adults and kids of all ages.

3. Hand Painted Gift Box

Last minute gifts they'll loveIf you prefer to go the DIY route, craft stores sell wooden boxes and acrylic paint. Create a custom keepsake for someone special with just a coat of paint or two. After repainting a side table last week, this little box was easy! Inside you can slip a gift card or some candy. This makes a good gift for sorority sisters as it makes a great pin box.

What are you going to do for last-minute gifts this year?

Side Table Refresh

Repaint Furniture for a New Look

Have you seen my room makeover before and after? Showing the before and after photos was so much fun I had to make a separate post for this little side table that I repainted as part of the project:

I’ve had this table for about eight years. I got it on the curb where someone had left it for trash. I stack magazine and catalogs in the open space so it’s been a useful item despite its worn whitewashed finish.

Using leftover Nautica paint from the room redo, I hand painted the table Arctic Tern (it’s a grayed white) with Flipper Jade accents. This interior accent color is my favorite part:

Repaint furniture for a new lookThis project was ridiculously easy. I did two coats of paint, letting it dry one day in between, and it was done! The leftover paint gave this previously sad little piece of furniture a new life as a crisp, polished room accent. If you’re looking for a way to spruce up a piece of furniture quickly, all it takes is a fresh coat of paint. It’s like getting a whole new piece of furniture without the cost!

Love this doily rug? This one has since sold out, but you can get a similar doily rug from Anthropologie in two different sizes and it is so cute.

And if you haven’t entered my giveaway to Menards, check it out before it closes! You could win $100 to repaint furniture of your own.

Nautical Inspired Room Makeover

Redecorating with Nautica at Home Paint from Menards + $100 Giveaway

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to try gray interior walls, So when Menards approached me to sponsor a room makeover with Nautica at Home paint, I figured it was time to take a chance on my dream hue. Would the gray tone make the other colors in the room pop? Would it add an air of heightened sophistication to my space? Well…read on to find out. And make sure to enter the giveaway for $100 to Menards as well! That’s enough to tackle a nautical inspired room makeover of your own.

Picking the Right Color

For me this was the hardest part! These tips from my interior designer friends helped:

  1. Compare the color to your trim. The way a color works will be largely determined by the color of your baseboard, doors, windowsills and crown moldings.
  2. If you can, buy a sample size of the color to try first. It can really be different than you think it will be. I bought seven (yes, seven!) sample sizes.
  3. You can always, always repaint if you don’t like it!

In the beginning, I was super set on finding a perfect neutral gray, and I learned just how many types of gray there are! This is why it’s so important to test the shade in your space to see how it “plays” with the lighting and other existing colors. Here are some of my favorites.

I love all these colors from the Nautica at Home line! Shown above: Blush gray: Rich Almond. White gray: Seafoam White. Blue gray: Ballard Blue. Lavender gray: Ice Water.

Using Nautica at Home Paint from Menards

My well-worn color chip booklet (seriously, I looked through that thing a lot) has hundreds of gorgeous colors. After those seven sample colors, I realized that I didn’t want gray walls at all! What I really wanted was to bring life and light to some basement walls with a dreamy turquoise hue called Flipper Jade. I used a white-gray accent color called Arctic Tern to repaint a side table and I love the way it turned out.

I went to Menards to pick up the paint, and was thrilled that Nautica at Home is low VOC (low odor). That is an absolute must for interior painting jobs! There is virtually no paint smell while painting and none after it dries. The color went on nicely and evenly, and it really transformed the space.

The open door gives a glimpse of how the Flipper Jade looks like against the existing bathroom color. The nautical inspired room makeover made a drab space leading to a bathroom and linen closet colorful and cozy.

The End Result: Nautical Inspired Room Makeover

105_1397 (2)Nautica Home paint is inspired by water and the sea. I love the names of the paint, which are all beach-inspired. As part of the makeover, a photo taken along the Oregon Coast became a canvas print to tie the space together. Now I can be reminded of the powerful wind, magical fog and expansive feeling that anything is possible.

The little side table got a full makeover including Flipper Jade accents, and I decided it deserved its own post, so stay tuned!

What color are your dream walls? Have you taken on any room makeover projects lately? I’d love to hear about them. Don’t forget to snag your entries to the giveaway, too.

Thank you Menards and Nautica Home paint for providing products to help me repaint and the gift card giveaway for my readers.
